Tall and elegant with long purple flowers, Verbena is found naturally in wet meadows and swamps. Moisture loving and a great addition to perennial herb gardens, prairies and savannas. Blue Vervain readily self seeds and can spread by rhizomes. The seeds provide forage through fall and winter and are enjoyed by cardinals, Dark-eyed Junco, sparrows and small mammals. The late summer flowers are frequented by butterflies, bees, moths, wasps and beetles. A host plant to the Common Buckeye, Verbena Leaf Midge and the Verbena Moth. The flowers and leaves tend to be bitter and are avoided by deer and rabbits.
Flowers and aerial parts are used to support sleep, anxiety and digestion and are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, bitter and astringent. Elegant yet exact in its appearance and qualities, Blue Vervain is a powerful medicine plant and should be used accordingly. Seek a trusted practitioner/herbalist for guidance.
