Our Farm

Located in Pocumtuck homelands, South Deerfield, MA . Our nursery is nestled on 2.5acres of fertile farmlands.

Our mission is to empower people to connect and be in relationship with the rest of the living world around us. Birds Eye Nursery envisions a world where people can see from a wide scope of view, where we can notice the nuanced relationships that exist around us.

The plants offer us hope and guidance, so that we can recognize that we as a species are not separate or alone. We all need each other and we all are connected in this vast and tremendously diverse web of life.

Land History

The valley is the homelands of the Pocumtuck peoples who fed their communities by farming the surrounding fertile riverlands. Our region has a long agricultural history pre and post colonization. Colonized in the 1700s Deerfield is known for its early periods of intense colonization, genocide and conflict. Despite colonial land grabs and later industrialization the rich farm lands have continued to support European settlers and others who have come over the years; the land is still known for its agricultural communities.

Our high water-tables and surrounding remnant wetlands provide clues to the lands previous forms. To the south lies conservation land known as the Great Swamp.; which is rich in diverse native plant species as well as Heron, Beaver, Turtles and countless other animals. Our ground waters feed the Bloody Brook watershed and the greater Connecticut River watershed. The land our nursery sits on has long been converted to farmland and was once used as dairy pastures and hayfields.

Our Plants

Grown with organic practices, mimicking natural germination and growing conditions. All of our plants are straight native varieties which have evolved alongside our insect and animal neighbors who rely on them. Our seed are sustainably collected from local ecotype plants and from other trusted growers.

Our specialty is in edible and medicinal plants that are often culturally significant to the original Peoples of the Northeast. We hope to welcome these loving plants into our hearts, homes and culture for generations to come.

Leaf Litter Compost

In collaboration with local landscapers and steamy aerobic bacterias we turn fall leaf litter into carbon rich compost that mimic the rich soils of forest floors. The compost is used to enrich our bare-root garden beds and in our seed starting mix along with light and fluffy coco coir. Growing our plants in living soil creates the conditions for them to become resilient and hardy perennials.

Resiliency & Hope

Native plants are a great way to create a balanced garden ecosystem that support and attract beneficial and predatory insects, birds and mammals that keep the system in balance. Often insects are specialist who have an intricate relationship with individual species of plants.

Hi I'm Savannah!

I come from many generations of farmers, gardeners, foragers and woods folk. My childhood was spent in the woodlands of the northeast where I developed a keen appreciation for all of the hidden relationships that are all around us. My love for the plants and the beings they support has led me to more formal trainings in herbalism and permaculture.

Us humans are powerful ecosystem engineers and have a critical role to play in the coming moments as climate change impacts our world. Welcoming native plants into our homes, habitats and gardens offers resiliency and hope in face of the coming changes. Birds Eye Nursery has been my way to share the gifts and generosity our plant relatives so openly offer.
